Vintage birthday cake

We’d already had our extended family birthday lunch two weekends back at Si Chuan Dou Hua. And our own little family celebration for DH’s birthday at Modesto’s on Sunday. Making a wish and cutting into a “calzone cake” was all good crazy fun and DH would have been happy with just that. But I really felt we ought to have a cake cake…even though half the family is currently down with some variant of cold, cough or the flu.

So on the way home from work, I popped by Polar and picked up an Old Polar cake.  We had tons of fun singing Happy Birthday with the kids, blowing the candle and cutting the cake, and DH loved it.  For the adults, the cake brought back happy memories of birthday cakes from our childhood – a basic vanilla sponge with raspberry jam in between the two layers and buttercream frosting on top.

Funny how the simplest things in life can turn out to be the most wonderful. It was all good. 🙂
